Asda slashes emissions with major Volvo dual-fuel fleet06 December 2013

Asda Logistics Services has taken 50 dual-fuel Volvo FM methane-diesel tractor units for its new distribution centre at Asda Avonmouth, Bristol – the second largest single order for dual-fuel trucks.

The trucks will run on LNG (liquefied natural gas) and diesel, using Volvo Trucks' derivation of Clean Air Power's conversion technology, in a move that Chris Hall, head of central transport for ALS, says will contribute to a 15% cut in carbon emissions.

Working with gas supplier BOC, Asda has also invested in a dedicated LNG refuelling station at its Avonmouth site, using environmentally friendly 'zero-loss' technology – much the same as that recently installed by DHL for its dual-fuel Volvo truck fleet at Bawtry in Yorkshire.

"Alternative fuels are an important part of our green agenda," comments Hall, as Asda joins big names including Sainsbury's, TNT, Hardstaff and Howard Tenens in the dual-fuel big league.

"When we take our longer trailer trials into account, together with the Volvo dual-fuel trucks, we will be able to increase the volume of goods trunked while at the same time reducing vehicle miles and cutting emissions by 15% over five years."

Asda's carbon-cutting programme includes the use of double-deck artics on store deliveries, which it says are saving more than 90,000 journeys and £10 million each year.
