Bus and coach registrations on route to recovery06 September 2013

Latest vehicle registration figures show an increase in bus and coach registrations of 56.9% to 488 units in August, compared with the same month last year.

However, in recognition of how tough market conditions still are, registrations for all bus and coach markets are down 16.9% year-to-date.

Purpose-built coach registrations up 15.4% to 643 units for the year-to-date, while for August 2013 (versus August 2012), ther was an inrease of 52% to 231 units.

"The bus and coach sector has recorded significant growth this month, compared to August 2012, following many months of negative growth in the wake of last year's Olympics-boosted sector," comments Wendy Williamson, SMMT bus and coach manager. "However, what is even more encouraging to see is that this month also marks a return to growth over August 2011, which was not affected by the Olympics boom."

This is a positive sign that the market will return to a trend of sustainable growth and that it will level off by the end of the year."
