City link in trials with 15 fuel-efficient teardrop trailers14 February 2011

Express delivery firm City Link, which moves half a million parcels a day, is looking to cut its carbon footprint by switching to Don-Bur teardrop trailers.

Fifteen of the distinctive fuel-efficient curtainsiders, with drag-reducing curved outlines, have been delivered to the company, which says it will now test them across the UK.

"The teardrop trailers are ergonomically designed to reduce drag, which leads to greater fuel efficiency, and we plan to test them in every way possible across the country," states City Link fleet manager Paul Hehir.

Fuel savings generated by the box van version of the teardrop, launched in 2006, are up to 18%, depending on operating conditions, with an average of 11%.

Don-Bur is now testing the Teardrop MK2, which, according to Don-Bur group marketing manager Richard Owens, has several "radically altered" features aimed at improving airflow, including new skirt, a tubular under-run and a "futuristic" rear frame design.
