ArvinMeritor off-highway trucks to be built in half the time27 April 2010

ArvinMeritor says it is expanding its off-highway axle business, following the launch of two axles for terminal tractor and all-terrain crane vehicles.

Tim Bowes, president of Industrial and Asia Pacific regions for ArvinMeritor, says that the new axles use a modular design for carriers, wheel-ends and braking systems, enabling the firm to offer OEMs custom equipment with lead times "50% less than its competitors".

"We are investing in product design and development, as well as manufacturing capacity, while simultaneously executing successful production launches for our growing customer base," comments Bowes.

Beginning with design flexibility and modularity, he explains that ArvinMeritor now fabricates, instead of casting, its axle housing components – so allowing size variations without retooling.

The company also uses its advanced gear manufacturing technology, he says, to meet requirements for planetary wheel-ends and differentials in cranes, terminal tractors, loaders, mining trucks and fork lifts.

The company manufactures its off-highway drivetrain components in Xuzhou, China, a joint venture with Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group, and at its manufacturing facility in Newark, Ohio.
