Driving challenge winner repeats 18% fuel saving with telematics11 November 2014

MiX Telematics says the second staging of its Eco-Drive Challenge has again demonstrated potential fuel savings of 18% when telematics technology is combined with driver training.

For the 2014 Eco-Drive Challenge, full-size coaches were equipped with the company's telematics system, as well as the optional RIBAS in-cab display, giving drivers instant feedback on driving style.

Drivers completed two trips around a 30km route. For the first circuit, they received only route directions while fuel consumption and driving styles were monitored by the MiX Fleet Manager solution.

This data was analysed by a trainer, who then joined each driver in the vehicle, giving continuous instruction and coaching throughout the second circuit. Each driver was also encouraged to check the RIBAS display.

The average fuel saving for the second journey was 12%, with the winner recording an 18% improvement – the same as the last event in 2012.

The challenge takes place at the biennial Autocar Expo coach exhibition in France, and is adjudicated by independent consultants and driver trainers.

MiX Telematics has also announced that it is working with road safety charity Brake in support of Road Safety Week (17-23 November).

MiX is helping to promote the event theme of 'Look out for each other' with roadside banners, as well as presentations to schoolchildren.
