Frugal New Actros sees Mulgrew back on Mercedes 17 June 2013

Having experienced "excellent all-round performance" from a demonstration tractor unit, and confident of improved fuel economy compared to its fleet average, Mulgrew Haulage has bought its first Mercedes-Benz tractors for 20 years.

The Northern Ireland-based operator has purchased 10 New Actros 2545 units from Mercedes-Benz Truck & Van (NI). Four are now in service, with the rest due for delivery soon.

"We'd seen and heard some very positive reports about the New Actros so we decided it was time to take a look for ourselves," says Paul Mulgrew, a director at Mulgrew.

"We ran [a demonstrator] for an extended period to get a true picture of how well it performed, and the results were certainly pleasing."

While Mulgrew doesn't go into details, he says that the trucks returned "some encouraging fuel returns, as well as being well liked by our drivers".

Mulgrew Haulage specified the Actros models with GigaSpace cabs and 450bhp straight-six engines. The new vehicles join a fleet of more than 100 top-weight tractor units, which undertake a variety of general haulage duties across Northern Ireland, the Republic, and mainland UK.

"Our New Actros tractors are already a little way ahead of the fleet average and we expect them to improve still further as they bed in," states Mulgrew.
