EMR goes for fuel economy on Volvo fleet specification 15 February 2011

Metal recycling specialist EMR has taken delivery of 21 new Volvo FH and FM trucks, all equipped with the I-Shift automated gearbox featuring Eco-Roll to optimise fuel economy.

The company specified 14 Globetrotter-cabbed FH-460s and seven FM 8x4s, equipped with Edbro Hookloader bodies. It has also taken one FL 4x2 skiploader – and they all join the existing 80-strong fleet of Volvos, working out of depots around the UK – including Bellshill, Sharpness and Tilbury.

EMR's transport manager Craig Fisher explains that he has been focusing on fuel efficiency. For the first time, his FMs feature the payload-friendly D11C litre engine rated at 370hp – chosen "for its reputation for reliability, fuel economy and low weight".

The 11-litre develops 1,750Nm of torque between 950 and 1,400 rpm, and Fisher says that wide spread of torque also "contributes to its excellent driveability".

As for the rest, the tag-axle 6x2 tractor units feature air-operated Jost fifth-wheels, while the tipping trailers also have air operated tailgates to aid driver and operator safety at work.

All the trucks will be maintained by the Volvo Dealer Network on two-year 'Blue' preventive maintenance contracts. They were supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials at Trafford Park, Manchester.
