HJS Emission Technology has upgraded a Glasgow City Council Volkswagen (VW) Crafter to Euro 6 emissions standards via a retrofit SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) exhaust system.

Retrofit SCR systems for light commercials enable compliance within clean air zones across the UK. It allows Glasgow City Council to continue to make use of currently non-compliant vehicles for years to come.

Mark Cooper of HJS Emission Technology has been assisting Glasgow City Council’s transport team to deliver an emissions recertification proof of concept to the Council. The VW Crafter was driven to HJS’s HQ in Menden, Germany, where it stayed for several weeks whilst the system was developed, installed and tested. Testing for all versions of the Crafter were completed to TUV standards which has led to Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme certification being awarded by the Energy Savings Trust.

The vehicle was delivered back to Glasgow City Council where the van will now be able to be used within the city’s Low Emission Zone with enforcement action commencing from June 2023.

Cooper said: “When I first started talking to Glasgow City Council about their fleet of Crafters I knew that HJS had partially developed a system. It has been a fantastic journey for all involved and it has been a pleasure working with the team at Glasgow”.
