‘Impressive picture’ for bus and coach registrations - SMMT11 August 2015

Bus and coach registrations for the year to date are up by almost 16%, driven past the 5,000-unit milestone by a 57% surge in registrations of 3.5- to 8.5-tonne converted buses.

According to the latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders for July, the overall monthly figure also increased by just over 7%, to 648 units.

"Year-to-date figures paint an impressive picture for the bus and coach market, with double-digit growth in all segments putting the sector in a strong position compared with 2014," says Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive.

"Continued coach operator confidence drove another month of growth for heavier single-deck vehicles in July, while demand for converted buses also led to impressive gains for the sector."

Hawes cautions, however, that confidence could dip among operators and manufacturers, if the market is not given greater clarify on the future of the Bus Service Operators' Grant and the detail behind the Buses Bill.
