J Exley steers towards crane-equipped Volvo FH05 March 2018

West Yorkshire-based crane hire and machinery removal firm J Exley has taken delivery of an unusual specification crane-equipped Volvo FH-460 rigid, with three steered axles.

Supplied by dealer Crossroads Truck and Bus, the FH-460 Globetrotter-cabbed 8x2 has twin-steer front axles and an actively steered tag axle, in addition to a 6m wheelbase and additional front frame extension.

The vehicle also has a special Fassi 545 lorry-mounted crane, complete with fly jib, for extra-long reaches and lifting. The crane has full 360-degree operation, thanks to retractable legs housed in the frame extension, giving it the ability to lift over the front of the cab.

The vehicle is powered by a D13K 454bhp engine with I-Shift automated transmission.

“We have another similar crane which generates a lot of jobs, so we’ll definitely get plenty of use out of this one,” says Andy Watmough, general manager at J Exley.

“Having the rear steer is a step forwards from the eight-wheeler this truck will replace, making it even better at getting in and out of where it needs to be,” he adds.

Watmough says the new vehicle will operate around the country, at both 32-tonne gross weight and at 44 tonnes with a drawbar trailer.
