Pressure’s on to monitor tyres every day - WheelRight24 December 2014

More than one in eight tyres (12%) from a sample of 500 vehicles has been found to be under-inflated by 20% or more.

WheelRight launched its mobile automatic tyre pressure system at an industry event last month, demonstrating its features by testing 2,000 tyres.

As well as increasing risks to safety, even 10% under-inflation can add £1,000 to the running costs of a typical HGV, in extra fuel use and tyre wear.

Attendees at the event drove over the monitoring unit, with tyre pressure readings sent to their mobile phones within seconds.

WheelRight says use of this type of technology should be a daily occurrence for fleets, rather than the industry standard of four to six weeks.

"Fleet managers have only been able to check their tyre pressures every month so far with the technology available to them," says John Catling, WheelRight's chief executive.

"But now we're offering the opportunity to embrace the benefits of daily tyre pressure checks."
