Van fleets moving to mid-range tyre brands, says Kwik Fit24 February 2015

As many as 50% of van fleets are fitting mid-range rather than premium tyres, according to Kwik Fit.

The tyre supplier is seeing more of its business coming from van fleets rather than company cars, and is predicting this trend will continue in 2015.

"While Kwik Fit's overall volume of fleet tyre replacement business will remain largely static, we are witnessing changes in the shape of the market," says the company's fleet director Peter Lambert (pictured).

"Van tyre consumption as an overall share of our fleet business is rising, while company car tyre consumption is contracting."

Average tyre consumption across all of Kwik Fit's fleet customers is 1.85 units per year, although some LCVs have had five replacement tyres in a year.

Currently, says Lambert, half of the tyres it supplies to van fleet customers are mid-range brands: "The majority of van tyres are replaced due to damage, rather than wear – unlike the vast majority of company cars, where 80% of tyres replaced are due to wear.

"As fleets are not always getting maximum benefit from their investment in premium brand tyres, managers are choosing to limit their cost exposure and opting to fit a higher percentage of mid-range tyres to vans."

Kwik Fit is using the fleet analysis to alter its LCV tyre stock profile across the firm's 600 UK centres.
