West Coast takes 16 Euro 6 FMX tippers for muckaway 23 May 2014

Muckaway specialist West Coast Haulage has received the first batch of Euro 6 Volvo FMX 8x4s, following its order for 16 of the tippers – the first Volvos for tis fleet.

The Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed, South Wales, operator says the FMX tippers are part of a fleet replacements cycle and expects the remainder to be delivered by July.

All were specified with Volvo's D13K-420, 13-litre engine rated at 420bhp (which delivers 2,100Nm torque between 860 and 1,400rpm) mated to the latest version of Volvo's I-Shift transmission, with distribution and construction software.

They are being built with the Day cab and B-Ride High rear suspension. Bodywork is by Thompsons with Edbro TS Series twin-cylinder, underfloor tipping hoists.

According to West Coast Haulage director Pat Sexton, the first Euro 6 FMXs are already returning fuel economy of 9.25mpg.

"The FMX is a proper muckaway truck," comments Sexton. And he adds: "Ground clearance is very good from all angles; there's a good bumper; and we like the front towing eye, which is mounted direct to the front of the chassis frame."

Sexton says his new FMXs will stay in service for three to four years, to maximise resale value.

All 16 of are being supplied by Truck and Bus Wales & West at Pontypridd and will be maintained on a three-year R&M contract there.
