Caledonian moves up to 13 new MAN TGX 540 tractors 27 March 2014

Aberdeen-based Caledonian Logistics has taken delivery of 13 new MAN TGX 26.540 6x2 tractor units for its Aberdeen, Inverness and Cumbernauld locations.

"We invested £1.6 million in a MAN fleet two years ago, on a two-year contract hire package," says Derek Mitchell, managing director of the palletised freight distribution firm, which is a member of Palletways and Partnerlink.

"Although the 440bhp units performed well, it was the two 540s that really stood out, so we have taken the decision to move up the power range for the majority of our premium duty tractor fleet," he explains.

"Initial fuel economy looks to be favourable, although we expect productivity to improve further once the vehicles have bedded-in in a month or two.

Caledonian Logistics now operates more than 50 vehicles, including 40 maximum-weight tractors, 18 tonne and 7.5 tonner rigids, alongside 14 non-tacho vehicles.

All the vehicles were acquired on five-year operating leases through MAN Financial Services. R&M will be carried out by MAN Truck & Bus Bellshill.

"We have enjoyed fantastic service from MAN Truck & Bus Bellshill over the last couple of years," comments Mitchell.

"In the workshop, our trucks are turned round quickly and efficiently, and the MAN team always responds to our needs."

Most of the new 540bhp fleet replacements are already on the company's high-mileage operation which sees them covering over 350,000km a year. Two units will be assigned to Cumbernauld for radial distribution work.
