Canute Group turns back tide of smaller semi-trailers17 April 2014

Distribution and logistics specialist Canute Group says it has solved access problems at some loading bays of a national high street retailer by specifying Tridec steering systems on two new 13.7 metre semi-trailers.

Glenn Marshall, engineering director for the Canute Group, explains that previously, the operator had to use smaller trailers, leading to high frequency deliveries and obvious inefficiencies.

"We are always on the lookout for new technologies that can improve our services," comments Marshall.

"That's why we've installed two of our newest trailers, which will be dedicated to a single customer, with the Tridec mechanical steering system from Jost."

The Tridec TD-X mechanical steering system reduces the turning circle of tri-axle trailers, using a mechanical arm attached to the kingpin, explains Marshall.

As the driver steers the vehicle, the arm is moved and steers the front and rear axle of the trailer. Not only does this create manoeuvrability comparable to that of a much smaller trailer, but it also reduces tyre scrub during turning, so prolonging tyre life.

"I've worked in the industry for a long time, but I've never seen a trailer configured in this way," comments Marshall.

"We were sent a demo trailer and straight away the feedback we got from the drivers was great. The steering is mechanically linked to the tractor unit, so it steers exactly where you steer, going forward and in reverse, and the handling is very good," he continues.

"We also found that it gave a 45 foot trailer a similar turning circle to a standard 30 foot trailer, which met our requirements perfectly. "

Marshall says that since operating with the new trailers, Canute has been able to reduce the number of miles for the customer without any negative impact on delivery times.

"We've also noticed the benefits, in terms of improved vehicle efficiency and tyre wear," he adds.
