DAF XF ‘clear winner’ for Owens Group13 February 2019

Owens Group has added 36 new DAF XF 480 six-wheel mid-lift tractors to its fleet, signalling a return to the marque after a ten-year absence.

Fuel performance and driver appeal were key factors in the decision.

Supplied by dealer Watts Truck & Van, of Swansea, the Llanelli-based operator’s new FTG axle-configuration additions will be based at its locations in Wales and the West Midlands, as well as its newest site in Manchester.

“We are replacing some of the fleet and also continuing to grow the fleet as part of our commitment to being 100% Euro VI,” says Eurof Owen, the operator’s commercial director.

“After trials on a number of different marques, the latest DAF XF was a clear winner.”

Drivers were impressed with the 480bhp engine and Super Space Cab, says Owen. What’s more, he adds, “our DAFs on trial returned just under 10.0mpg, and that’s excellent for our operations where we operate up to 44-tonnes gcw and with specialist Tall Boy 4.6-metre (3.1-metre internal height) curtainsided trailers.”

The company also rates the manufacturer’s roadside assistance service. “We’ve had experience of DAFaid support previously, and it remains the benchmark vehicle support and recovery service in the industry,” adds Owen.
