Daily range launches in the UK for the greener generation04 February 2010

The lineup in the new Daily range from Iveco is the greenest ever, reflecting the industry's need to clean up its vehicles and help minimise the impact on the environment from commercial vehicles.

Speaking at the UK launch of the vehicle, Martin Flach, Iveco product manager, explained how the new Daily range – featuring Eco and Electric models – would be "as sturdy as a truck, but as comfortable as a car."

The EcoDaily features an expanded lineup to a 7-tonne version, beyond the previous limit of 6.5 tonnes. This model will be made available to order from the second quarter, and offers an increased payload of 470kg.

"Our 7-tonne version cuts transport costs and increases flexibility and versatility," claims Flach. "It can match the payload of three 3.5-tonne vehicles, and has the emissions of just one [vehicle]."

All but two of the engines are Euro 5 compliant. In green terms, the twin-turbo 3-litre F1C engine, with 170bhp, is the first LCV engine to be homologated to the enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle (EEV) standard. Equipped with a 1,800 bar common-rail fuel injection system, and optimised EGR system, it allows improved economy, thanks to the two turbos providing more torque at the bottom end of the rev range.

Nigel Emms, Iveco's brand and communications director, admits that this model will not be the volume seller, but says it will be "attractive to those customers and organisations that want to be seen to be more environmentally aware". There is also a £2,000 price premium accounting for all of the technology on board.

A much larger price tag can be expected for fleet managers interested in zero emission transportation, via the EcoDaily Electric, which is powered by NaNiCl2 batteries. Flach says the Daily electric will "continue to use Zebra's Z5 batteries, because lithium-ion cannot be proven, and we know that the products we use can be recycled easily".

Two models are available from launch, with electric power - a 3.5-tonne version with two batteries, which offers a range of 90km, and a 5-tonne version, which provides a range of 130km from four batteries.
