EU regulators can accelerate adoption of greener vehicle fleets, says Goodyear17 October 2014

Regulators in Europe could drive a greener road transport sector by incentivising operators to adopt more fuel-efficient fleets.

That's among the key recommendations in a white paper published by tyre manufacturer Goodyear.

Called 'Mobility of the future: smart fleets and the future of the transport industry', the report includes results from research, as well as recommendations for policymakers.

Goodyear's research reveals that more than half (53%) of fleet managers believe there should be more incentives to run environmentally-friendly fleets, and 60% favour incentives for buying fuel-efficient tyres.

One in ten (11%) fleet managers cite the impact of regulations as one of the top two challenges facing the road industry as a whole.
Almost three-quarters (74%) believe that reducing fuel taxes would have a positive impact on the road freight industry, and a further 72% support investment in the road network.

"Our research shows that the road freight industry is willing to become even more sustainable," says Michel Rzonzef, Goodyear's VP for commercial business in EMEA.

"It clearly points out that fleets are already investing in technologies to reduce fuel consumption and need further support from European and national regulators."

Goodyear launched the white paper at is recent transport industry symposium, in Brussels, where it debated the ways in which the sector could become more sustainable.

Recommendations for European legislators include: promotion of the EU tyre label; mandatory tyre pressure monitoring systems for new commercial vehicles; clarity on reforms regarding weights and dimensions of commercial vehicles; and more support to fully exploit the potential benefits of telematics.
