Ferryspeed takes 30 more DAF mid-lift tractors 21 May 2013

Jersey-based freight firm Ferryspeed has added 30 DAF tractor units to its fleet, to support growth both in the movement of ambient and temperature-controlled freight under HACCP standards both on mainland UK and the Channel Islands.

The new DAFs bring the Ferryspeed mainland fleet to 50 along with more than 400 trailers. It runs a further 80 vehicles on Jersey and Guernsey and 10 rigids which operate out of Portsmouth on Palletways work.

All of the new trucks are 6x2 mid-lift FTG XF105 vehicles for operation at 44 tonnes. Power is provided by 12.9 litre MX engines rated at 460bhp at 1,900 rpm and delivering 2,300Nm of torque between 1,000 and 1,410 rpm.

The engines are mated to the 12 speed AS-tronic automated transmission, and Ferryspeed specified the high-end Space cab version.

Ferryspeed's new tractors will pull a variety of trailers including 10 Gray & Adams 13.6 metre long high-cube refrigerated units. These trailers are to a chassis-less design and are fitted with a lifting deck from the swan neck to the rear to give them a 40 pallet capacity.

A Frigoblock refrigeration system has been installed in the swan neck area, with a remote evaporator on each deck for tight temperature control.

The new vehicles are now based on the mainland, mainly at the company's 10-acre Portsmouth site, with some operating out of a depot opened by Ferryspeed in Rugby last year.

DAF dealer Adams Morey of Southampton supplied the trucks and will provide service and parts support through its Portsmouth dealership.
