Government investigates emissions from brakes and tyres27 July 2018

The government has launched a call for evidence on the impact of emissions from brakes, tyres and road wear.

Ministers want to find out more about the non-exhaust emissions that all road vehicles can produce, to look at ways to minimise any impact on air quality from tyres and brakes.

Brakes and tyres release particulate matter – for example, dust and soot – during general wear, and rain washes these particles into sewers and, ultimately, oceans.

The government has worked with scientists from the University of Plymouth and it estimates that 5-10% of the plastic in oceans could come from tyre wear emissions.

Transport minister Jesse Norman (pictured) said: “Particulate pollution from exhausts has been reduced substantially in recent years. But we must also take action to reduce the very serious pollution caused by the wear of tyres, brakes and roads.

“Tackling this issue is crucial for reducing air pollution. We would urge anyone who has expertise in this area to get involved and share their evidence and views.”

The call for evidence runs until 28 September: click the link below to participate.
