IRTE man nominated for Chartered Environmentalist of the Year 21 May 2014

SOE (Society of Operations Engineers – the umbrella organisation for IRTE) has nominated Peter Scanlon, for the Chartered Environmentalist of the Year Award 2014.

Among Scanlon's most recent projects has been the lead role in bringing electric vehicles to his employer Skanska's fleet.

"We are participating in a trial with both Shell and Nissan whereby electric vehicles will be deployed to our fleet," states Scanlon.

Key goals from this two-year project, he says, include:

Trailing a new service that will help fleet managers cost-effectively manage the introduction and set-up of electric vehicles in fleets.

Reduce the carbon footprint and emissions associated with Skanska's fleet of commercial vehicles and company cars.

Test ways in which the operation, charging and administration of EVs can be optimised to reduce total cost of fleet ownership by delivering energy savings.

Test the integration of electric vehicles into Smart grids and determine the potential to generate ancillary revenues through the demand-response energy market – considering electric vehicles as energy stores, not just mobility tools.

As part of the project, Scanlon is also involved in installing charge points at Skanska depots and offices as well as in employees' homes.
