Optare Solo EVs to service HRH’s eco-friendly village 28 February 2011

Two electric-powered Optare Solo EV buses have been ordered by Dorset County Council to provide a service for Dorchester and Poundbury, the Duchy of Cornwall's eco-friendly village.

Paul Cooper, passenger transport development officer at Dorset County Council, says that choosing the Solo EV, the only British-built electric full-size bus, was the right thing to do.

"Using electric powered buses will deliver significant fuel cost savings when compared to conventional diesel engined vehicles. It is also a good environmental choice with reduced carbon emissions and air quality benefits for residents."

Purchased by the council with Green Bus Fund grant aid, the new buses are expected to be delivered during the Summer of 2011. Final specifications are still being worked out but the buses will be 8.8m long versions of the Solo.
