Volvo’s Euro 6 FH delivers fuel boost for Scottish haulier02 May 2014

Currie European Transport has ordered 25 Euro 6 Volvo FH tractor units, after a two-month trial revealed average fuel consumption of 9.85mpg.

Supplied by dealer Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland, the first ten vehicles went into operation last month with the Dumfries-based haulier.

All of the 6x2, Euro 6 FHs were specified with Volvo's D13K500, 13-litre engine, rated at 500bhp, and Globetrotter XL cabs.

The D13K500 develops 2,500Nm maximum torque between 1,000 and 1,400rpm. A final-drive ratio of 2.79:1 was chosen, together with the I-Shift automated gearbox. Dynafleet telematics provides data and reports.

"We have only had the first Euro 6 vehicle since 1st March, but early fuel data indications show consistent weekly improved fuel figures," says Stephen Turner, Currie's managing director.

Volvo's Dynafleet system, he adds, provides useful feedback on driving style and fuel data, and Volvo's fuel advice manager is training drivers to optimise the vehicles' potential.

The trucks have been acquired on a three-year contract hire and are expected to cover 180,000km per year.
