Actros truck impresses Westfield Transport fleet 08 March 2011

After an absence of many years, Mercedes-Benz is back on the fleet of one of Cornwall's leading haulage contractors – and is proving very popular with drivers.

Westfield Transport's Actros 2546 MegaSpace is trunking five nights a week between the company HQ in Truro and the Palletforce hub in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire – a 13-hour round trip.

During the day, meanwhile, it undertakes local deliveries in the south-west, and Robert Walker, Westfield Transport's managing director, says it is proving very frugal with fuel.

"We've traditionally favoured a single vehicle marquee, but I wanted to try a different make of truck," comments Walker. "[Dealer] City West provided an Actros demonstration unit, which did well, and the deal on the table was attractive."

Walker, who runs a fleet of 52 trucks, says that the build quality, and comfort and storage capacity have caught the eye of his drivers.

"The Actros is pulling a big, double deck trailer, which obviously has an adverse impact on fuel consumption. We were hoping it would return in excess of 8mpg and it's comfortably ahead of that target, so we're delighted," he says.
