Scania to drive growth on gas-powered buses04 April 2012

Following success in several Swedish cities, Scania is to launch a low entry gas bus into the UK, with in conjunction with bodybuilder Alexander Dennis.

The new vehicle will be based on Scania's KUB chassis with Scania's 270bhp EEV 9.3-litre five-cylinder, energy-efficient, lean-burn gas engine, without exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

The company claims that, just as with other similar gas engined vehicles, noise and vibration levels are low and the engine can operate on either compressed natural gas (CNG) or biogas.

In fact, the bus is based on the same platform as Scania's modular-build 9.3-litre diesel engine passenger vehicle, which limits the number of new components required for the low entry gas chassis to around 40 items.

The collaborative venture will see Scania supply its KUB chassis and high pressure lightweight composite tanks to Alexander Dennis for fitment of an adapted Enviro300 43-seat, 12.2-metre overall length body.
