Sir Moir Lockhead to lead IRTE Conference 2013 on cutting costs and improving efficiency 16 July 2013

Former FirstGroup chief executive Sir Moir Lockhead OBE will be delivering the keynote at this year's major IRTE Conference on 11 September 2013, at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon.

Sir Moir – recently retired and now patron of the SOE (Society of Operations Engineers, the umbrella organisation for the IRTE) – is a renowned champion of transport, having spent his working life in the industry.

Opening the event – with its theme of 'Cost-effective and efficient fleet management and operations' – he will discuss technology developments and the engineering issues for today, as well as the secrets of delivering business and operations success.

Given his experience of moving up the ranks from technician apprentice more than 50 years ago to become founding director and CEO of the largest provider of transport services in the UK, USA and Canada, he should make interesting listening.

Big names on the following him on the conference agenda include speakers from Carlsberg, Fowler Welch, KBC Logistics, Lafarge, Sainsbury's and Wincanton – all providing advice and guidance on how to improve efficiency and cut costs in transport and maintenance operations.

Key topics include the real engineering and cost implications of Euro 6 (chaired by Andrew Nicol of world-renowned Ricardo) and experience to date with a wide range of technologies aimed at reducing fuel consumption and improving efficiency.

Others range from experience to date with longer semi-trailers and hybrid trucks, to resolving issues of compliance – with an expert panel that includes senior traffic commissioner Beverley Bell and VOSA chief exec Alastair Peoples – and a legal update on the role of transport manager.

Additionally, delegates will get a first-hand update on the new Centre for Sustainable Road Freight, from director David Cebon, professor of mechanical engineering at Cambridge University and director of the new centre, who will reveal strategies that cut transport costs and emissions, while also improving efficiency.

They will also hear from Andrew Davis, national fleet engineer with Carlsberg, will reveal his organisation's approach to specifying and purchasing vehicles that are fit for purpose and offer best total cost of vehicle ownership.

Sponsors of the event include Airtab, Bullwell Trailer Solutions, CVL, G-Volution, HRVS, MAN Truck & Bus, Pirelli, r2c, TRW and Truckfile, with Mobil Delvac in a supporting role.
