UK’s first new FH rigids go to Universal Recycling 26 March 2014

The first new series FH rigids in the UK have gone into service with Sheffield-based Universal Recycling Company, which recently also took delivery of a '63' plate Volvo FMX 8x4 hooklift.

The two '14' plate, 6x4 double-drive configuration prime-movers, which join the firm's 20-strong fleet, will be coupled to drawbar trailers and operate at 44 tonnes collecting and delivering recyclable materials from sites across the UK.

"Product quality, the spacious new FH cab and driver appeal were key to the company's decision to invest in the new trucks," explains Universal Recycling Company director John Hughes.

"The new trucks are on a five-year R&M contract with [Volvo dealer] Crossroads and, in terms of parts availability and dealer service, Volvo is the best in the country," he adds.

The FHs were specified with the 13-litre engine rated at 540bhp and have been fitted with Hyva hooklift equipment.

The FMX was equipped with the 500bhp version of the Euro-5 spec 13-litre engine. It was also fitted with a Hyva hooklift.

Interestingly, a lovingly refurbished 6x4, 1979 'T' reg F7 rigid (pictured right) – driven by three generations of the Universal Recycling Company's owners – shows the differences with the the latest Volvos. The F7 was defleeted 10 years ago and is now used for show purposes.
