Volvo engineers shake up designs with James Bond23 October 2014

James Bond and a herd of wild horses were just two of the images used by Volvo Truck's design engineers to visualise the styling for its latest series of trucks.

"The image of James Bond describes the new Volvo FMX personality well," reveals Asok George, the manufacturer's chief of exterior design.

"Agent 007 looks great in a tuxedo, but he is also equally cool after having been in a fight. The same goes for the new Volvo FMX, which must look striking even after taking a couple of hard knocks," he adds.

The wild horses, meanwhile, were used to inspire the design of the FH16, using the combination of "refined power, strength and freedom".

The revelations come as Volvo Trucks describes its design process, notably the lead time of several years required – which calls for some future gazing ahead of changing society trends.

"We started working with the new Volvo FH back in 2006," explains Rikard Orell, design director.

"Back then, no one had heard of an iPhone, yet when the FH was launched in 2012, smartphones were suddenly an integral part of society. We must be able to predict this kind of change."
