The analysis of road accident statistics was carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and Centre Européen d’Etudes de Sécurité et d’Analyse des Risques (CEESAR), and it offers guidance on the strengths and weakness of the safety measures proposed as part of the GSR revision.
It found, for example, that systems to detect pedestrians and cyclists are 50% more effective in reducing fatalities and injuries than redesigning trucks to create ‘Direct Vision’ low-entry cabs.
The report also states that the benefits of reversing detection for trucks would be “very limited” in terms of accident reduction.
Extending front- and side-impact protection to vans and SUVs would also be limited, the report finds, given that the vehicles already have a high level of occupant protection.
