TEIAS (Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation) has acquired four new Volvo FH trucks, each equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions, for its heavy equipment transport requirements.
The deal follows 30 years of service with its previous trucks, all of which were specified with Allison CLBT 6061 gearboxes, which have transported heavy electrical grid equipment (50- to 190-tonne transformers and reactors) across Turkey, covering 4.5 million km without incident.
The new FH trucks were specified with Allison 4700 automatic transmissions with built-in retarders, designed to operate in harsh conditions, and delivering strong startability, uninterrupted power to the drive wheels and smooth gear shifting, using Allison's Continuous Power Technology.
"Vehicle efficiency and durability are critical to our operation," comments Tuncer Tokaç, special loads and mobile transportation and operations manager at TEIAS.
"A black-out is not an option, and Allison Transmissions meet our requirements and help keep our vehicles operational," he continues.
"Sometimes we have to operate over rough terrain and on very steep inclines. An Allison fully automatic transmission with torque converter and retarder provides significant advantages in both launch and braking."
Tokaç also points to the long maintenance intervals, which, he says, mean reduced operational costs and extended vehicle life and uptime.
"In fact, because there are not expensive clutch repairs and replacements, maintenance costs with an Allison automatic are considerably less," says Tokac.
