So says road transport safety campaign Steersafe founder Chris Hanson-Abbott, who is also managing director of Brigade Electronics.
And he adds that blind spots make compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act impossible “because no vehicle with them can be safe to drive”.
For Hanson-Abbott, the excuse that 360-degree driver visibility is impossible has long been swept away by 360 degree camera technology, which gives truck drivers a bird’s eye view all around a vehicle on a single image.
“One glance reveals all, instantly: the inexperienced cyclist sneaking up on the near side of a long vehicle at the lights is now driver-visible,” he insists, adding that young people’s lives need no longer be cut short.
Multiple mirrors, with their limited field of view, are of little help, or no help at all, he continues, insisting that they simply lead to driver disorientation.
“The 360 camera systems are available from several suppliers already. FORS is conspicuous by its silence on this most dramatic breakthrough for vehicle safety. Why?”
