Budding bus drivers and technicians of the future will be able to explore the latest Optare Solo midi bus at the London Transport Museum, when its ‘All Aboard’ play zone opens later this week (28 March).
Manufacturer Optare has given the custom-built vehicle to the museum. The bus was loaded into the area by being suspended in mid-air before lifting engineers from Allelys manoeuvred it into place using a heavy-duty forklift truck.
Designed for children aged seven and under, the zone enables them to sit in the driver's seat of the Optare Solo, as well as other play and learn experiences such as repairing a mini Tube train and sailing a Thames Nipper.
The Solo's low-entry floor, combined with the front axle forward of the front door, makes it easy for young children to climb aboard the fully flat lower saloon area.
