Bus operator Go North East has awarded a contract to emissions reduction specialist Eminox for its SCRT technology, which will be fitted to 40 Euro 3 buses – bringing them up to Euro 6 standards.
The contract requirement was to achieve minimum reductions of 70% NOx and 50% NO2. Eminox beat this by a hefty margin, with its ability to reduce NO2 by almost 97%.
Eminox's SCRT technology will now be fitted to the 40 Scania L94 Euro 3 buses, apparently bringing them in line with Euro 6 vehicle emission standards.
The deal was funded by Sunderland City Council, Durham County Council and Gateshead Council, which, together, bid for £600,000 from the Department for Transport's Clean Bus Technology Fund.
"Thanks to the Department for Transport's Clean Bus Technology Fund we are able to implement Eminox's SCRT technology on 40 of our older buses," says Kirk Trewin, chief engineer at Go North East.
"This, together with our other initiatives, means that we continue to operate one of the greenest bus fleets in the UK."
The SCRT system combines CRT (continuously regenerating trap) with SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology to produce a system that reduces both particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), as well as hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO).
