Castell Howell Foods beefs up fleet with Volvo FH

Tractor Units
Welsh operator Castell Howell Foods has taken delivery of a Volvo FH13 6x2 to meet growing demand for its products, including the Celtic Pride beef brand.

Supplied by dealer Mansel Davies and Son, the Volvo FH is coupled to a Chereau bi-rail meat trailer with a Thermal King SLX400 front mounted fridge unit.

Powered by a D13K500 engine producing 500bhp, it is equipped with I-Shift automated transmission. The 4.1m wheelbase unit also has a Globetrotter cab and is specified with the Drive Plus, Visibility and Personal Protection packages.

Transport director Martin Jones says the new vehicle is "an important investment" to help the company meet growing demand and is the flagship vehicle for the premium beef brand.

Drivers, he adds, played a part in the vehicle choice: "They certainly have an influence in our purchasing decisions when it comes to the trucks. Based on experience, we simply don't get any trouble with Volvo trucks and our drivers chose them and like them."

The FH joins Castell Howell's fleet of 100 rigids, 15 vans and five tractors – three of which are now FH models.

The latest addition is expected to cover 150,000km each year and it is already averaging more than 9 mpg.
