The council moved to Michelin in April 2013 and says it cut its tyre spend by 11% for 2013/14.
The following year, tyre spending dropped by a further 3% as more Michelin tyres were rolled out, and it expects savings to continue this year.
The council operates 360 vans, 37 RCVs (refuse collection vehicles), 17 heavy goods vehicles, 13 minibuses, six road sweepers and four cars.
“We’re getting improved longevity and durability from every Michelin tyre we fit,” says fleet services systems administrator Alfonso Mata.
“It’s particularly noticeable on the RCV fleet, which is arguably the toughest on tyres,” he continues.
“Although the RCVs don’t do high mileages, they carry out some of the most demanding work and risk coming into frequent contact with the kerb during daily collections.”
On-site fitting is carried out by ATS Euromaster, Southampton. ATS technicians also regroove as many tyres as possible, extending tyre life by up to 25%.
