Network Rail says five bridge strikes happen every day across the country, and has launched the ‘Wise up, Size up’ campaign to encourage drivers to fully understand the size of their vehicles and plan their routes.
Research carried out by Network Rail revealed most of the vehicles that hit railway bridges are HGVs; 43% of drivers admitted to not checking the height of their vehicle before heading out, and 52% admitting to not taking low bridges into account when planning their journeys.
Eddie Stobart is providing its drivers with a toolkit to educate them on the impact of bridge strikes, which cause disruption for road and rail users alike.
“By reminding our drivers of the correct behaviours to follow at multiple times during their shift, though branded posters and reusable coffee cups, air fresheners, key rings and vinyl stickers for their cabs, we hope to keep them ‘bridge aware’ at all points of their journey,” says Dave Pickering, COO at Eddie Stobart.
The campaign is also supported by the Road Haulage Association, Freight Transport Association and operators including Wincanton, Asda and Tesco.
