Global truck makers agree on platooning standards

ACEA, the European truck manufacturers’ association, has announced that several of its members participated in a global summit recently, where EU, US and Japanese engine and truck makers called for more collaboration on platooning.

Chief executives from the organisations discussed future regulations and standards, and agreed that industry and governments must work together to promote vehicle connectivity.

The summit meeting was chaired by Yoshio Shimo, president of Hino Motors and chairman of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association’s heavy vehicle committee.

He said: “Commercial vehicle and engine manufacturers have made definite progress in exhaust emission reductions, fuel efficiency improvements, and the global harmonisation of test methods and regulations.

“We have also reaffirmed the importance of identifying our common issues and sharing perspectives unique to heavy duty vehicles, and our intention to continue talks on vehicle connectivity with the communications infrastructure, and reconfirmed our awareness that the best approach to resolving connectivity issues is closer cooperation between government and industry.”

The industry leaders also agreed to prioritise how best to tackle the technical issues of connectivity, as well as to move forward with developing international fuel efficiency measures for HGVs.
