The operator’s four CNG-powered Scania trucks are all based at its Swindon site and feature Don Bur’s Teardrop body to improve aerodynamics and fuel performance.
All four vehicles are part of the Dedicated to Gas Project within the Low Emission Freight and Logistics Trial, funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) in partnership with Innovate UK.
The first two vehicles in the trial have travelled over 200,000km, with no breakdowns or faults with the gas system. Driver feedback is said to be “excellent”, with no difference in performance observed between the diesel and gas models.
“We are delighted that our trial of dedicated gas technology has been so successful to date and that we now have the confidence to add two more vehicles to the fleet,” says Ben Morris, executive director at Howard Tenens.
The two latest rigids are new-generation models, with improved fuel efficiency and range. Their performance will be closely monitored throughout the trial, particularly with regard to fuel, reliability and cost, as well as the environmental benefits.
The dedicated gas trucks are powered solely by biomethane, which gives a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 75% compared to diesel.
