Ipswich buses begins trial of biogas double-decker

Ipswich Buses has started a six-week trial of a biogas-powered bus, which it hopes will deliver up to 84% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to an equivalent diesel-powered vehicle.

The double-decker is based on a Scania chassis with ADL’s Enviro400 body. It is powered by Scania’s OC09 9-litre, five-cylinder engine delivering 276bhp at 1,900rpm and 1,350Nm torque at 1,000-1,400rpm.

Its ZF EcoLife six-speed fully automatic gearbox features ZF’s Topodyn automated gear selection, which is fitted as standard. The bus can run on biogas or compressed natural gas.

During the trial, temporary gas-refuelling infrastructure will be provided by Roadgas.

The Scania E400 biogas bus has been certified and tested under the Low Emission Bus Scheme: certification delivered greenhouse gas well-to-wheel savings of up to 84%.

Danielle Devonish, marketing manager at Ipswich Buses, said: “We are delighted to be given the chance to trial the biogas-powered bus.

“We believe biogas is a strong contender on how buses will be powered in the future.”
