Johnston Fuels drives efficiency gains with Mercedes-Benz Uptime

Tanker operator Johnston Fuels says it is “delighted” with the Mercedes-Benz Uptime system, specified on its latest vehicle, declaring it to be “breakthrough” technology for keeping vehicles on the road.

Fitted to the Bathgate-based operator’s latest truck – an Actros 2545 with StreamSpace cab, supplied by Western Commercial – the telediagnosis programme monitors the vehicle in real time, flagging up critical conditions at an early stage.

Data is shared by the manufacturer with the operator, to ensure repairs can be planned in good time. For example, the system will flag up in advance that a brake pad change is required, and time can be set aside for this to be dealt with when the truck goes in for its scheduled six-weekly check. Previously, worn pads might not have been spotted until the inspection – entailing a second visit to the workshop.

Lee Potter (pictured), director of Johnston Fuels, says: “It’s a fantastic system. The small extra cost of this technology will be easily outweighed by the savings we stand to make, through the reductions in unplanned maintenance that will keep our new Actros where it belongs – on the road and earning.”

The Actros joins another new Mercedes vehicle, a 6x2 Arocs rigid, delivered by the same dealer earlier this year.
