JR Glenn turns heads with new Volvo FH tridem

Rigids
JR Glenn & Daughters has taken delivery of a Volvo FH Tridem 8x2 rigid for the distribution of potatoes to fish and chip shops across London and along the M25 corridor.

Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre East Anglia, the Sandy-based operator’s new addition features a Globetrotter cab and 460bhp engine with I-Shift automated transmission – and, thanks to the tridem configuration, it can carry up to 19 tonnes while maintaining the manoeuvrability required for deliveries in the capital.

Lead driver Jamie Hall says: “She turns on a sixpence and because of the mid and rear-steering axles you don’t need to swing out to take a left turn, which is a really useful attribute in London traffic.”

He also likes the gearbox: “I-Shift is as smooth as you can get and, combined with the Volvo Engine Brake+, for incredible engine braking as well as the superior comfort of the FH cab, the working environment is fantastic.”

Hall describes the truck as “the most comfortable” he’s ever driven, adding: “The spec of the cab and truck overall means the residual value in three years’ time should reflect positively in our overall running costs for the period. I am positive this investment makes great sense for the business.”

The truck’s bodywork is by Priden Engineering, with paintworkby DJ Elbury and Son, both of Wisbech.

It also features a lighting system designed for city operation: an orange LED strip is fitted the full length of the body on both sides, and is linked to the indicators so the side of the truck flashes when the vehicle is about to turn.
