While copper grease was once widely used to reduce brake squeal, modern brake pads – including the entire Juratek range – come equipped with premium anti-noise shims or coatings specifically designed to prevent noise and vibration.
In fact, the application of copper grease can increase brake noise, reduce component lifespan and interfere with modern vehicle systems, warns the specialist.
“Modern braking systems are more complex and electronically integrated than ever before,” said Matt Leeming, head of product management for Frasle Mobility in the UK. “Using copper grease is not only unnecessary but potentially damaging – particularly to ABS and EPS systems, where conductivity from the copper can cause serious interference.”
Juratek’s premium anti-noise shims are tested rigorously to SAE2521 standards, the benchmark developed by OEMs to alleviate braking noise. These tests are conducted in anechoic chambers using full vehicle corner assemblies, ensuring real-world relevance and reliability.
Other risks of using copper grease on brake pads include degradation of rubber seals, potentially leading to fluid leaks or even brake failure, and pad sticking, preventing proper sliding within the caliper.
Copper grease does still have its place to prevent seizing or corrosion elsewhere on the vehicle, however, on non-braking contact points when fitting replacement pads, it is better to use ceramic or silicone-based lubricants that are designed for use with modern braking systems, advises Juratek.
