Mercedes-Benz has started production of the fully electric eSprinter van at its Dusseldorf plant.
Dignitaries and employees were at an event yesterday (12 December) to see the first vehicle roll off the line.
The manufacturer says production of the eSprinter marks “a new era” for the factory, which has built more than 4.6 million vans since 1962.
In a statement, Mercedes-Benz said it has invested more than Eur 3.3 million in the past few years in the facility, which will be able to build conventional and electric Sprinters on a single production line.
The plant is also the manufacturer’s centre of competence for electric drives; more than 2,400 employees have undergone training to handle and assemble high-voltage equipment.
