Vehicle engineering, R&D and testing establishment MIRA has added a second, twin-axle, dynamic suspension parameter measuring machine (SPMM).
The Nuneaton-based specialist already has had the UK's only original quasi-static two-axle SPMM, at its Kinematics & Compliance (K&C) facility, since 1996.
A £2.5 million investment, the dynamic SPMM provides high-resolution measurements for suspension and steering parameters, and features an increased vehicle mass and wheelbase capacity.
Ian Willows, consultant in vehicle dynamics at MIRA, explains that the new system's high-speed actuators allow measurement of both quasi-static and dynamic kinematic and compliance characteristics.
And he says that the added dynamic capability enables measurement of vehicle mass properties, centre of gravity and moments of inertia – a second, vital, data set for vehicle dynamics engineering specialists.
"This investment reiterates MIRA's leading position in cutting edge automotive technologies and builds on our portfolio of expertise available to help our customers develop world beating products," states Willows.
"We believe that this facility is unique and the exclusive access that we provide to specialist technical skills and facilities, such as the new dynamic SPMM, is what makes MIRA the engineering partner of choice for some of the world's biggest vehicle manufacturers."
