Montracon builds centres of excellence for trailer production

Trailer business Montracon says it is making progress with a strategy to align manufacturing facilities to specific products, including “major investment” at its Doncaster plant.

Managing director Paul Avery’s arrival at the start of this year, it says, has underpinned Montracon’s position in the UK market and he is driving its export ambitions.

As well as “fine tuning” the company’s short/medium-term strategy – including a stronger focus on high volume products – Avery (pictured) has led a period of change designed to drive up quality and delivery standards.

Montracon has installed beam welding equipment at its Doncaster plant, which is now established as its centre for curtainsided trailers. Production will double at the site, says the company, and further investments planned for the next 12 months include a semi-automated production facility.

As part of the product-specific site strategy, dry freight van production has already moved from Doncaster to the Market Weighton facility, the centre for reefer and insulated products. Market Weighton will now also become the centre for rigid bodies, says Montracon.

The site at Mallusk, Northern Ireland, will concentrate on the design, development and building of other trailers, such as flat platforms machinery/plant carriers, rolling bogie skellies, tippers and associated specials.

Recent UK wins include a large order for curtainsider bodies on rigid chassis for a commercial vehicle contract hire and leasing company. Overseas orders include refrigerated trailers for a Malaysian supermarket chain and a close coupled curtainsided drawbar trailer for Coca-Cola.
