New European protocol agreed for trailer EBS data

Trailers
A new industry standard has been agreed for data generated by trailer electronic braking systems (EBS).
The agreement was reached by the European Transport Board, which represents major European transport and logistics businesses, and has resulted in a protocol called Trailer CAN (TCAN). The protocol specifies the data exchange between braking and auxiliary data collection systems – such as telematics – on towed vehicles weighing more than 3,500kg. It was initiated by TIP Trailer Services and has been agreed by the three largest EBS manufacturers: Knorr-Bremse, Wabco and Haldex. "We firmly believe that its introduction will improve the data collection and analysis capability on trailers, leading to greater efficiency and safety for both fleets and operators," says Matthew Fry, Knorr-Bremse's engineering manager for trailers and systems. The TCAN protocol is available for download by clicking the link below. It will be implemented by the EBS manufacturers when they release the next versions of hardware and/or software.
