Supplied by dealer MBNI Truck & Van via municipal provider RD Mechanical Services, both of Newtonabbey, the nine new additions are all 6x2 Econic 2630 L models and are fitted with Dennis compactor bodies and Terberg lifts.
The RCVs are powered by 7.7-litre engines transmitting 295bhp via six-speed Allison automatic gearboxes, while rear-steer axles provide optimum manoeuvrability.
The council’s waste operations manager Neil Patrick is overseeing the fleet modernisation, and says: “These Mercedes-Benz trucks will bring a range of benefits.
“I know from experience of having operated Econics in the past that they are extremely reliable, while the design of the cab means they offer excellent levels of comfort, ease of use and safety for our crews and other road users.”
The council has also specified the Econics with Sideguard Assist, which uses two short-range radar sensors mounted on the passenger side of the vehicle to alert drivers to the presence of cyclists and pedestrians. “The system is absolutely essential when operating in narrow streets which are often lined with parked cars,” says Patrick.
“We’re delighted with the Econics,” he adds. “As well as being reliable and safe, the fact that they have replaced older vehicles which did not meet the latest emissions standards means they are also contributing to our efforts to minimise the effect of our operations on the local environment.
He also praises the manufacturer and dealer for working closely with RD Mechanical “to deliver vehicles which are perfectly specified for our needs”.
