WheelRight has recently finished a one-year trial of its new ‘drive-over’ technology – developed in conjuction with Highways England – which was carried out at Keele services on the southbound M6.
More than 150,000 tyres were checked during the trial, 50,000 of which were from HGVs.
The company says huge variances were found with tyre conditions. One HGV driver who used the system was found to have a tyre of 19psi on his vehicle – a reading he initially disbelieved due to it passing the ‘kick test’ before he set off. The pressure was confirmed with a gauge, says WheelRight; the tyre was removed and the inner was found to be falling apart.
“The impressive take-up of our system at Keele demonstrates that there is a real appetite in the CV industry for a quick and easy means of monitoring tyre condition,” says John Catling, WheelRight’s CEO.
“We’re demonstrating to CV operators that there is a simple and cost-effective way of checking your fleet’s tyre pressures on a daily basis.”
