Supplied by dealer Orwell Truck & Van, both 3.5-tonners are 3C13 models powered by 3-litre engines generating 128bhp. Their aluminium double dropside bodies are by Commercial Bodies, of Norwich.
The latest arrival has a standard five-speed manual gearbox, while the first has a Duonic dual-clutch automated transmission, which features park and creep functions for low-speed manoeuvring.
RB Watts tried the dealer’s demonstrator in June, when it was looking for a new truck, and found it to be “a lot more impressive” than the vehicle it was replacing.
“It was apparent from the outset that the vehicle is built to a very high standard, with a strong chassis and comfortable cab, yet it also offered a competitive payload, and was well received by our drivers, too. In fact, we liked the truck so much that we bought it,” says Chris Watts (pictured), managing director and son of the founder.
The operator had “no hesitation” in returning to Orwell for another Canter, adds Watts, but this time with the manual gearbox so the two can be compared for handling and fuel economy.
The vehicle’s cab-forward layout is proving beneficial, he adds: “The Canter has a tight turning circle, while visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent.
“These attributes are proving really useful when we’re getting on and off construction sites, where access can be very tight.”
The Canters are supplied with three-year, unlimited mileage warranties and 24/7 emergency roadside assistance cover.
