Scania and MAN are currently studying the potential for collaboration on component supply and pre-development work for commercial vehicles.
The companies say they have identified several strategic areas that are not brand-related as up for joint research.
Scania says it might adapt its manual gearbox for use in MAN trucks. Scania could also use MAN's rear axle for heavy applications in the 36—40 tonne range. Similarly, it might use MAN's transfer cases in Scania trucks. And Scania and MAN have common ideas on hybrid components for heavy trucks and buses.
Leif Östling, president and CEO of Scania, says that detailed evaluations are now underway to determine the potential for cost savings.
"After a preliminary analysis, we have concluded that, with this kind of joint component supply there are potential synergies without jeopardising our strong brand identities and the individuality of our products. Both companies and all shareholders should profit from the collaboration."
